Thunderstorms moving through Wisconsin on final day of heat wave

LA CROSSE, WI (WTAQ) - Thunderstorms are moving across Wisconsin’s mid-section, in advance of a cold front that’s supposed to bring the state’s week-long heat wave to an end Friday night.

A line of storms rumbled through the Wausau region during the 6 a.m. hour.

The National Weather Service did not issue any warnings, and there were no immediate reports of storm damage.

Forecasters say severe weather is possible in the Madison and Milwaukee regions Friday afternoon and early evening as the cold front moves southward.

The storms carried winds of 58 miles an hour in Rochester Minnesota. The Weather Service in La Crosse says up to a half-inch of rain could fall in a one-hour time period in that region.

Highs in the 80’s and 90’s are again predicted for Friday throughout Wisconsin. The heat index is supposed to be a few degrees cooler, after 110 near Onalaska Thursday – the highest recorded in the state this week.

Once the front goes through, Friday night’s lows will get down to the 50’s and 60’s.

Saturday’s highs will be around 20 degrees cooler than Friday, in the 60’s and 70’s. Rain is possible again on Sunday, and officials say it could be Monday before 80 degree weather returns.
