Governor Walker supports prosecuting mining protesters making threats

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) --  That video of protesters threatening Gogebic Taconite workers not only went viral on social media, it got Governor Scott Walker’s attention.

The video posted on Facebook by protester Andrea Ladenthin show masked protesters yelling and threatening workers that are boring test holes in the proposed northern Wisconsin mine site.

Governor Scott Walker made it clear that violence will not be tolerated.

He issued a statement Friday saying, “The type of harassment and abuse we saw on the recent video of radical activists at Gogebic Taconite's proposed mine site has no place in Wisconsin.

These extremists, who are disrupting work and causing harm to law-abiding employees, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

A group called Earth First! had around fifteen masked protesters on the site June 11th, when they threw mining employee’s equipment around, knocked down fences, and took items from worker’s vehicles including a camera and cellphone.

Katie Kloth faces charges for those thefts plus charges of criminal damage to property.

Governor Walker in his statement said, “I appreciate the efforts of law enforcement in the area and spoke with the Iron County Sheriff to offer any assistance that may be needed going forward. The laws of Wisconsin will be upheld.”

Protesters have vowed to make it as difficult and expensive as possible for Gogebic Taconite to perform their tests.

Another group that is opposed to the mine is also opposed to Earth First! and their tactics.

Bad River Indian Tribe leader Mike Wiggins issued a statement Friday saying the tribe, “condemns any planned or improvised act of violence or vandalism” against the mining firm.
