Tracking the ""It"" Color at the Golden Globes

By Abbey Stone, Hollywood.com Staff

From calls of ""Who are you wearing?"" to the myriad of Best and Worst Dressed lists that populate publications the next day, awards shows are abuzz with fashion chatter. Yeah, yeah, people win awards too, but we all know that the dresses are the real stars of the show. With the right gown, any actress can be a winner — even if all she does is smile and clap politely while someone else takes home the trophy for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.

Choosing the perfect gown is a science. Celebrities must consider such important factor as body shape, skin tone, risk factor, and trends. And by trends we don't just mean style trends — you know, like, pink is the new black, and floral is so hot right now — but cultural trends. Which color is having a really great year? Which hue will bring the wearer the best luck? In anticipation of the 70th Golden Globes Awards on January 13, we're taking a look back at what could have (but we're in no way claiming actually did) inspired the color trends that dominated past ceremonies.

Up Next: 2012 was black and blue all over[PAGEBREAK]2012: Winners in Black, Nominees in Blue

At the 69th Annual Academy Awards, it looked as if the nominees and winners had called each other to coordinate before hitting the carpet. Was it just chance that Claire Danes, Jessica Lange, Kate Winslet, and Meryl Streep — who all wore black and white — all walked home with trophies? Or were they cosmically destined to win because of their style choices? The nominees who walked home empty-handed (including Jodie Foster, Bérénice Bejo, Tilda Sinton, and Sofia Vergara), however, wore blue (below). Blue: the color of their disappointment.

But of course these ladies didn't know their fates when the got dressed that night, they only had hopes and dreams. So why do we think they chose to dress in black and blue? Take your pick.

They wanted to pay homage to the Backstreet Boys. In 2011, the year the shows and movies eligible for the 2012 Golden Globes aired, the Backstreet Boys (whose 2000 album was named Black and Blue) hit the road with fellow boy band New Kids on the Block for their comeback tour. It's clear that Kate, Sofia, Meryl, and the rest were super bummed that they didn't get tickets.

They're disguised as bruises. Yes, I mean the clotted capillaries that result from a swift punch in the arm. Movies that feature hitting and kicking and fighting in general — think, The Fighter, The Wrestler, The Hurt Locker, Million Dollar Baby — have a track record for taking home the belt, if you will, at awards shows. Maybe these ladies, who didn't star in such violent films, hoped they could channel some of that coagulating luck. For some, it paid off.

Up Next: In 2011, pink was the new black[PAGEBREAK]2012: Warm Tones

In 2011, two main trends emerged — both of which said goodbye to boring black. Celebrities from Natalie Portman and Claire Danes (who took home trophies for their work in Black Swan and Temple Grandin, respectively) to youngsters Lea Michele and Emma Stone were pretty in pink. Meanwhile, fellow A-listers January Jones, Katey Sagal, Kyra Sedgwick, and Christina Hendricks stuck to the warm end of the color spectrum as well, but went for bold shades of tangerine. What big pop culture moments of 2010 inspired their wardrobe choices?

They're making a statement regarding global warming. After fading into the background once Al Gore's 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth became yesterday's news, the climate change debate was reinvigorated in 2010. The year boasted some of the highest temperatures on record, and tensions rose what gigantic chunk of Greenland broke off into the Atlantic Ocean. Floral accents on Hendricks' and Portman's gowns drive home the fact that these fashion choices were environmentally-inspired.

They're obsessed with Pink, the musician. Pink brought the house down with her Cirque du Soleil-inspired Grammy performance, prompting the world to go ""Hot damn! Pink's still got it!"" Could be these ladies were looking for a similarly enthusiastic reaction.

Up Next: Purple and gold dominated in 2010 [PAGEBREAK]2010: Regal Tones

It rained during the 2010 Golden Globes, but that didn't keep the stars from shining brightly. Purple, the color of royalty, and gold, the universe symbol for wealth, turned heads that year. Rose Byrne, Fergie, Jane Krakowski, and Sandra Bullock were drawn to the regal shade of purple while Tony Collette, Mo'Nique, Nicole Kidman, and Anna Paquin decided to dress as the coveted statuette. Now, we scratch our heads, what could have prompted these rich, jewel tones?

They're paying homage to the King of Pop. Sadly, in 2009, music royalty Michael Jackson passed away. By the time the Golden Globes ceremony took place in January 2010, the world had moved past its grief and into a full-fledged celebration of Jackson's illustrious career. The Grammy's paid tribute to the King of Pop, and This is It became the highest grossing concert documentary film of all time. What better way to tip your hat to one of the greatest performers of all time than to dress in royal colors?

The movies told them to. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, one of the biggest movies of the year, mentions gems not once, but twice! The Young Victoria and The Princess in the Frog were also among nominees for the 67th Academy Awards. It's as if the actresses said, ""Okay, okay, I can take a hint.""
