MARYVALE, AZ (WHBL) - The Milwaukee Brewers will start the season with a third-stringer at first base. That’s after Mat Gamel was ruled out for the year, after he tore the A-C-L ligament in his right knee for the second time in 10 months. It happened Saturday at Spring Training, as Gamel was getting ready to be a temporary replacement for Corey Hart – who’s out until May after knee surgery. Now, Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke will try out a number of players on his roster to keep first base warm until Hart returns. The possibilities include 24-year-old Hunter Morris, last year’s Southern League player-of-the-year at Double-“A” Huntsville. He won a Gold Glove there, and batted .303 with 28 homers and a .920 on-base-plus-slugging-percentage. Morris says he hasn’t accomplished anything at the big league level, and he’ll need to prove that he belongs. Roenicke will also get a look at utility infielder Taylor Green, veteran Tony Gonzalez, Bobby Crosby, and last year’s Triple-“A” starter Sean Halton.
