Bad River tribe ordered to fix waste water problems by January

ODANAH, Wis. (WSAU) - The Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to upgrade their wastewater treatment plant. EPA officials didn’t give the tribe a lot of time to finish the upgrades, saying all problems must be corrected by January 31st of 2014.

EPA officials say the tribe failed to meet reporting requirements and didn’t comply with effluent limits for E. coli, suspended solids, phosphorus, and biochemical oxygen demand. The agency wrote a compliance plan for the Bad River to follow.

Tribal officials claim to have spent about one-point-six million dollars since 2009 to solve the problems at the treatment plant.

The Bad River’s troubles became a topic of discussion earlier this spring when they claimed the planned Gogebic iron ore mine a short distance from their community would contaminate water and ruin the local environment.
