Veterans information could be added to ID's, driver's licenses soon

MADISON, WI (WSAU) -  It may be a lot easier for veterans to handle their identification and paperwork in the near future. The Wisconsin Legislature has passed Senate Bill 45, which allows a veteran to indicate their status right on their drivers license or identification card.

State Representative John Spiros was one of many supporting the bill.  He says this measure will help simplify document handling for veterans, and could even help prevent identity theft by putting important information on one ID card. “What it does is it allows veterans to go ahead and have the information put on their driver’s license so that they don’t have to carry around their form DD form 214 or their disability papers. This will give them one more advantage from the standpoint that they can go to the Veterans (services) or if anyone comes in contact with them, they will know they’re a veteran.”

Spiros says this bill had support from everyone, and simplifies things for our former service members. “Everybody was for this. It went through committee, and passed the committee without any problems and actually came through my committee, transportation. I was a cosponsor of this bill. As a former veteran, I’m proud to be part of it.”

SB 45 has already passed the Senate. It’s now off the Governor Scott Walker for his consideration.
