WAUKESHA, WI (WTAQ) - Waukesha authorities say they’re still considering possible charges against a man caught with a gun on the Carroll University campus – even though it was an air soft gun that shoots only plastic.
The private college was placed on a lockdown for an hour-and-a-half Tuesday, until police found the 50-year-old gun carrier and arrested him at his home.
Police captain Ron Oremus said his officers got a number of tips, and they surrounded the man’s home before taking him away in handcuffs.
Two students were the first to see him, and they called authorities even though the man did not appear threatening in any way. Oremus said the gun looked real, even though it was no more potent than a BB gun.
He said the campus and police response are a product of our times – and all such incidents must be taken seriously, in light of Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings and recent mass school shootings.
One Carroll official said it was the private school’s first lockdown in the 18 years she’s been there.
