SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - It was the end of an era in Sheboygan at Monday night’s city council meeting. Mayor Terry Van Akkeren had served as county supervisor, alderman, assemblyman and mayor and called it a career after 25 years, as he adjourned his final council meeting. Van Akkeren said, "I've been doing this for over 25 years, I've enjoyed it, I've had a great career, I've enjoyed working with the people of Sheboygan." Van Akkeren received a standing ovation from the council and the audience. Mayor-elect Mike Vandersteen takes over when the council re-organizes tonight. He defeated Van Akkeren by 197 votes in the election earlier this month.
