FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) - Nearly two million gallons of partially treated waste water was dumped this week into Lake Winnebago.
Fond du Lac wastewater treatment plant manager John Leonhard says there is no cause for concern. The plant was overwhelmed on Wednesday, forcing the dumping of the water.
Leonhard tells FOX 11 even the partially treated waste water is still cleaner going into Lake Winnebago than the water from the Fond du Lac River and the lake water itself.
The facility can treat up to 34 million gallons of wastewater a day. It normally treats about 6.4 million.
Leonhard says with the rain and melting snow, the facility has been treating about 12 million gallons a day for the past few weeks.
Leonhard said Fond du Lac had 1.8 inches of rain Tuesday and Wednesday. It meant the facility was trying to process about 36 million gallons of wastewater.
Leonhard says the extra 1.9 million gallons went through four of the five treatment steps before being discharged into the lake.
Leonhard says the DNR was notified of the discharge, but Leonhard says he does not expect any issues will arise.
