Schaffhausen refuses to take stand in sanity trial, defense rests case

SAINT CROIX, Wis. (WSAU) - Aaron Schaffhausen refused to testify today in his sanity trial in Saint Croix County. The defense then rested its case, and prosecutors began calling its own witnesses.

This is the second week of a trial in Saint Croix County, which will determine if the 35-year-old Schaffhausen was sane when he killed his three young daughters in River Falls last July. If he was sane, he’ll go to prison for life. If not, he’ll go to a mental institution. Schaffhausen has already pleaded guilty to three homicide counts and a charge of attempted arson.

The prosecution’s first witness was a former neighbor of the couple. Lisbeth Danielson said Schaffhausen called her five-to-10 times after he and Jessica broke up in 2011. He wanted to know if his wife was seeing anyone – and many of the calls ended with Schaffhausen getting upset.
