FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) - Residents on Fond du Lac's east side felts and heard an explosion Thursday morning.

One person living next door suffered minor injuries from the blast that happened at the corner of Twilight Trail and Moonlight Lane just before 5 a.m.

While just the one person suffered minor injuries, it could've been much worse.

"It sounded like a lightning strike of some sort,” Troy Haase with the Fond du Lac Fire Department told FOX 11.

And seen by someone driving by the moment it happened.

"I don't know what the heck happened. It just blew up!” said a caller to an emergency dispatcher.

Firefighters arrived to find a newly-constructed condominium on fire. No one was living in the condo and no was inside when it exploded. One person, who lives next door, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. As dawn arrived and the flames cleared, the damage became evident.

"There's parts of home everywhere. There wasn't a fire initially, but one ensued and we had to extinguish it,” said Haase.

Those who work and live near the scene say they were surprised to hear no one was seriously injured.

The builder says it could have been much worse.

"There was a client that had just closed on one side and they were just getting ready to move in. Thank God they had not spent the night in the condo or anything. Then, the other side was an unfinished unit that had not been sold yet. So, we're very, very fortunate no one was occupying the other side,” Glenn Elmer, a builder with Signature Homes, told FOX 11.

Fond du Lac Fire Department officials say nothing appears to be suspicious at this time.
