G-A-B accurately predicts election turnout

MADISON, WI  (WSAU)  -  The Government Accountability Board predicted before the election there would be a 20% turnout. Actual turnout was a little over 19%.

Reid Magney from the G-A-B says they predict the elections by looking at history. “You look at the other races, going back, and they’re in the neighborhood of 20, 19, 18 percent, so it’s going to be around there.”

Magney says they calculated the voter turnout using the votes cast for Supreme Court Justice, as that had the largest number of statewide voters.

The board doesn’t keep track of statistics on local referendum issues and on local city, county, and town races. Magney says voter turnout locally will be determined on how important the race is to the people. “These are races that are for offices that are very close to the people. Each one of these races is it’s own situation so you get people interested in those local things.”

The G-A-B calculates voter turnout percentage on the number of eligible voters 18 and older. Magney says some clerks give a voter turnout number based on the number of registered voters, which has a smaller number of possible voters and reflects a higher percentage of those voters showing up to vote.
