MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A former state legislative aide was ordered Friday to pay back another $4,600 to taxpayers, for her role in the State Capitol’s illegal campaigning scandal in 2002.
60-year-old Sherry Schultz pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of misusing a public job. She was accused of helping former Assembly Majority Leader Steve Foti run a tax-funded GOP campaign operation from their office.
Five former lawmakers from both parties were convicted in the scandal.
Schultz and former Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen had felony convictions dropped in 2007, due to an error in a jury instruction. New trials were ordered for both, and Jensen settled his case almost two years for a $5,000 penalty.
Dane County Circuit Judge David Flanagan said he could not allow Schultz to pay nothing – but it was appropriate that there be a reduction from the $58,000 in restitution that was ordered in her 2006 conviction.
Schultz was told to pay $7,200, minus $2,600 for restitution and fees already paid.
