Exclusive: 'Smash' Star Megan Hilty Reveals Her Favorite 'Marilyn' Song

Marilyn Monroe may have left us in body, but her spirit is alive and well thanks to Megan Hilty, who plays Broadway baby Ivy Lynn on the NBC musical series Smash. And while Hilty is no stranger to life as a Broadway star, having played Glinda in the production of Wicked, her transition into television has her on the way to becoming a household name. But aside from the show's extremely talented cast, the musical drama itself hosts an incredible score of original Marilyn Monroe-themed songs. And just like the rest of us, Hilty has a favorite: ""Let's Be Bad.""

Hollywood.com News Editor Lindsey DiMattina spoke with Hilty at Duracell's March 21 kick-off For ""Rely On Copper to Go for The Gold"" Olympics program in New York City, and got an inside scoop on the actress's take on the small-screen production of Marilyn: The Musical and her transition into a Smash-ing star.

On her favorite Marilyn Monroe musical number:

""With the original music, they're all so beautiful, but I'd definitely say 'Let's Be Bad'...It was just this huge number and it was the first one we ever did that was fully fantasy. It was great.""

On how she would feel if Marilyn: The Musical actually became a Broadway show:

""It would be fantastic. It's such a great idea for a show. Unfortunately, it does take years to get a show onto Broadway, so it would take a little time, but I'd love to get an audition for it.""

On what she loves about Smash:

""I love that it's centered around music. Music has a way of touching people that words alone can't do. And I think that's why it appeals to the people that it does because it's different. We're trying something that's very, very different and I'm proud of that.""

On what she loves about Ivy:

""I think maybe her vulnerability. It's beautiful because she's a very dynamic character. She's deeply flawed, which makes her human and even though she misbehaves a little bit, I think everybody can identify with her on some level, especially because everybody knows what it feels like to be stuck in their job and to want to move forward. I completely identify with her on that level and I don't think you have to be in theater to agree with that.""

On what it was like working with Bernadette Peters:

""It was one of those many dreams coming true moments on the show because she's been my idol since I was a kid. She's really the reason why I wanted to become a musical theater performer specifically and then she was the one I looked to when deciding what to do with my career. I looked to her and people like her and thought, 'What did they do to make themselves so successful?''

On her transition from Wicked to Smash:

""It's the best of both worlds. I get to combine Broadway with TV, so everyone keeps asking me what I prefer and it's like, 'Well, it doesn't really matter because I get to do both.'""

A new episode of Smash airs March 26 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT) on NBC. But in the meantime, check out the show's episode ""Let's Be Bad"" to hear Hilty's favorite song.
