SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - A high school sophomore from Sheboygan County is back home, after she narrowly escaped injury in last Friday’s movie theater shootings in Aurora Colorado. 15-year-old Katie Trakel of Plymouth was in the theater next door to where James Holmes allegedly opened fire. She was with 11 friends at a conference when they went to a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Trakel said they heard pops before a bullet penetrated through the wall, and hit her friend two rows behind her. Trakel says that friend will be okay. She said it was loud, crazy, and chaotic in the entire theater complex as moviegoers scampered to get away. Trakel said she’s glad to be back home – but the victims weigh heavily on her heart. Twelve people were killed in the massacre, including two with Wisconsin ties – UW Whitewater graduate John Larimer, and Macayla Melek, who has relatives in Milwaukee. Carey Rottman of Mequon was among the 58 wounded.
