MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The state Health Services Department is taking public input for another week on a comprehensive plan to fight obesity in Wisconsin.

Officials are eager to move forward with a plan that was first created 7 years ago to encourage Wisconsinites to eat right and engage in physical activity.

State public health administrator Karen McKeown says a number of local coalitions have been formed in recent years in which health systems and private businesses promote healthy lifestyles. McKeown says those networks have amounted to a statewide infra-structure that’s been necessary for moving the state’s plan forward.

It’s a 124 page document outlines the best types of physical activities for young people – plus ways for adults to make healthy choices for meals.

McKeown says the state’s plan will need support from both the public and private sectors in order to succeed. It aims to show people how to chip away at a statewide obesity rate that was 27 percent last year.
