SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - Sheboygan School Superintendent Joe Sheehan is standing behind the action taken Tuesday at Madison Elementary School when a student was not allowed to distribute valentines with a religious message.  The student wanted to hand out candy with a note reading “Jesus Loves You."  Sheehan said the principal contacted the district office and was told to remove the message and then allow the candy.   Sheehan said the action was taken to “assure neutrality with regard to religion in schools."  According to the Sheboygan Press, David French, an attorney with the American Center for Law and Justice, said the district erred when it took the action.  French said it’s a free speech issue.  He said a student does not shed his constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate.  French represents the student’s mother, Melissa Wolf.  Sheehan said valentines are not a free speech issue.
