Wisconsin National Guard troops helping local agencies with storm response

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Around 120 Wisconsin National Guard troops are on active duty to help local agencies handle emergencies from the heavy snow we’re getting Thursday.

A number of armories have been set up as emergency shelter and warming areas. And soldiers are out helping stranded drivers, checking on people’s welfare when needed, and helping highway workers close roads.

Some state troopers reported early for their daytime shifts, while afternoon shifts are being extended. And the DNR has over a dozen wardens available to help authorities.

The State Capitol is open Thursday, while a number of state office buildings are closed to the public. State offices in 22 counties are closed, mostly in southern Wisconsin and as far north as the Green Bay area.

A number of places in the Badger State have already gotten more snow than what was predicted for the whole day.

Northfield in Jackson County had a foot on the ground by 7 a.m., and Chili – about 10 miles west of Marshfield – had 9 inches.

The snow’s supposed to clear out late Thursday night, but state highway officials say it will slow down traffic Friday as well. That’s because of all people heading home for Christmas.
