Australian DJs lose their show over Duchess prank tragedy

From WENN.com

Mel Greig and Michael Christian became global celebrities last week (ends09Dec12) when they duped staff at the King Edward VII Hospital in London by pretending to be members of Britain's royal family and gained access to the pregnant Duchess' private medical information during her treatment there.

The nurse who took the call, mother-of-two Jacintha Saldanha, was found dead three days later in a suspected suicide, prompting widespread criticism of the two radio presenters, as well as a barrage of complaints and online abuse.

The DJs' Hot 30 show on Sydney radio station 2Day FM was suspended following the tragedy, and bosses at Southern Cross Austereo (SCA), the company which owns the station, have now confirmed the show will not be returning to the airwaves.

On Monday (10Dec12), radio bosses released a statement revealing the show has now been axed and they have also banned any further prank calls.

The statement reads, ""Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) today reiterates its deep regret for what has taken place. The Company, board and team at SCA take the events of the last few days very seriously. A number of actions have been taken since the events took place, including; The suspension of all advertising on 2Day FM until further notice; The termination of 2Day FM's Hot 30 show; A Company-wide suspension of 'prank' calls; A comprehensive review of relevant company policies and processes.""

It is not clear whether Greig and Christian will continue working for the radio station, with bosses adding the hosts ""will not return to the airwaves until further notice.""
