Brewers Pound Cubs

CHICAGO, IL (WHBL) - The Milwaukee Brewers exploded for nine runs in the ninth inning Monday night to crush the Cubs in Chicago, 15-4. Ryan Braun, Aramis Ramirez, and Corey Hart hit back-to-back-to-back homers – the first time the Crew did that since September of 2007. The Brewers took a 6-4 lead into the ninth when Alex Hinshaw gave up a three-run shot to Braun for his National League-leading 35th homer of the year. Ramirez then belted his second homer of the night – the first of which put Milwaukee in front for good in the fifth inning. Hart’s blast then made it 11-4. Lendy Castillo then gave up four more runs, including an R-B-I single by Braun as Milwaukee sent 14 batters to the plate in the ninth. Cubs’ manager Dale Sveum eventually gave up on his bullpen, and outfielder Joe Mather gave up an R-B-I single before retiring pinch-hitter Martin Maldonado for the final out. Braun also had an R-B-I double as he went 4 for 6 with five R-B-I’s on the night. Ramirez belted his league-leading 43rd double in the first, which gave Milwaukee an early lead. Carlos Gomez also homered and had four hits, as the Brewers out-hit the Cubs 21 to 9. Brett Jackson had a solo homer for the Cubs, who lost their sixth straight to the Brewers and are now just 3-11 against the Crew this season. Marco Estrada picked up his second straight win, giving up three unearned runs in five innings. He’s now 2-5. Justin Germano took the loss, surrendering five runs in five-plus innings. The Brewers and Cubs will play again tonight at Wrigley Field. Right-hander Yovani Gallardo faces Cubs’ lefty Travis Wood.  Coverage on WHBL begins at 6:30.
