DNR reminding folks to recycle brush instead of burning it

by

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The warm and dry spring has state officials urging folks to recycle their brush and rubbish instead of burning it.

The DNR reminds people that it’s illegal to burn garbage in Wisconsin, because it sends a variety of pollutants into the air. But lots of people ignore the law, as trash fires account for 30-percent of all wildfires in the Badger State each year.

State law requires Wisconsinites to recycle their plastic, paper, cardboard, glass, and aluminum. Brush can be burned with DNR permits – but this year, officials urge people to either send the brush to compost piles, or spread it in the woods instead.

Cities throughout Wisconsin have just completed their warmest March on record, including Green Bay, Madison, and Milwaukee.

In La Crosse, the average temperature month was almost 16 degrees above normal – while liquid precipitation was over an inch-and-a-half less than normal.

Wisconsin has already had a number of wildfires, about a month ahead of schedule. There’s a chance of rain Monday in the northern half of Wisconsin, and a chance of showers in eastern and southeast areas Monday night and into Tuesday.

Highs are expected to be in the 50’s and 60’s all week, with slightly lower temperatures from Wednesday into next weekend.
