MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) - The latest Navy combat ship that’s being built in Marinette will be named the USS Milwaukee.
It’s the fifth littoral combat ship built at Marinette Marine.
Construction began last month, and it’s scheduled to be sent to the Navy in 2014.
Littoral combat ships are smaller vessels designed to be operated close to shores – where they can hunt for submarines and support military ground troops. The USS Milwaukee will be 388-feet long, and will travel at speeds past 40-knots. A
mong the other ships built at Marinette are named in honor of Fort Worth Texas and Little Rock Arkansas.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus will meet Tuesday with Mayor Tom Barrett to discuss the new Milwaukee warship.
Fans at Tuesday night’s Milwaukee Brewers’ baseball game will see a video of the littoral ship, as Mabus throws out the ceremonial first pitch.
