Power to be cranked up on electric barrier fence for Asian carp

CHICAGO, IL (WTAQ) - Federal officials say they’ll turn up the power on an electrical barrier designed to keep the invasive Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.

The Army Corps of Engineers said Friday it would increase the electrical settings this fall on the barrier, which has been operating for several years on a shipping canal southwest of Chicago that’s connected to Lake Michigan.

Officials say it’s doing a good job of blocking the bloated carp – but there are concerns about the barrier’s ability to stop very small fish.

DNA tests have shown that several carp have gone past the electronic barrier in the past couple years.

Major General John Peabody of the Army Corps said its tests have shown that the barrier can be more effective without being a danger to people and vessels which pass through the canal.
