Bus crash in Virginia kills four and injures 54

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Four people were killed and 54 injured in an early morning bus crash on Tuesday on Interstate 95 in Virginia's Caroline County, the Virginia State Police said.

The driver of the bus, Kin Yiu Cheung, 37, of Flushing, N.Y., was charged with reckless driving and is being held on a $3,000 bond at the Pamunkey Regional Jail in Hanover County, a statement from the police said.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated on the scene.

The injured on the Sky Express Bus were sent to hospitals in nearby Fredericksburg, Richmond and Hopewell for treatment. Injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening, the police said.

"The bus ran off of the right side of the road and overturned -- coming to rest upside down on its roof," according to police statement.

The bus was a commercial tour bus headed to New York City's Chinatown, authorities said. It left Greensboro, North Carolina, at 10:30 p.m. Police were called to the scene at 4:55 a.m.

After a deadly bus crash near the Bronx in March that claimed 15 lives, New York State Department of Transportation cracked down on many of the discount bus services known as Chinatown buses. That tour bus crashed at 5:30 a.m. as it was returning to Chinatown from a Connecticut casino.

Police were said to have issued more than 150 moving violation tickets to bus drivers during the follow-up effort aimed at enhance safety standards for drivers and equipment.

One of the offenses included a North Carolina bus that was taken out of service because the driver had falsified his log book. Many other drivers were ordered off duty after they were found to lack required rest.
