Major Layoff in Milwaukee Public Schools

MILWAUKKEE, Wis. (WHBL) - Almost 520 employees in Wisconsin’s largest school district are being laid off this week. Milwaukee School Superintendent Greg Thornton says 354 teachers are among those being let go. He blames massive cuts in state aid, plus the school district’s own efforts to cut costs. Thornton said the Milwaukee schools would lose 84-million-dollars in state aid over the next two years, under the budget Governor Scott Walker signed last Sunday. The district is also eliminating hundreds of other positions, many of which are vacant right now. About 220 Milwaukee teachers retired after the last school year – which reflects a trend that’s been going on statewide for the last few months.
