Teen Couple Charged with Abandonment

APPLETON, Wis. (WHBL) - Two Fox Valley teens are free on signature bonds, after making their first court appearances on charges of abandoning their newborn daughter. 18-year-old Benjamin LaMarche of Kimberly and 17-year-old Nadia Zahirudin of Appleton are accused of leaving the baby near a dumpster outside a church in Kimberly on May ninth. Both are charged in Outagamie County with child abandonment and child neglect. And at their next court appearances, a judge will decide if there’s enough evidence to order a trial. LaMarche is due back in court July first, and Zahirudin will have her next hearing July 26th. A man walking his dog found the infant and notified authorities. The teens could have escaped criminal charges had they followed Wisconsin’s Safe Haven Law – which allows people to drop off unwanted babies to hospitals and law enforcement with no questions asked. Zahirudin said she didn’t know about the Safe Haven Law until she read about it in media accounts about the abandonment.
