Looks like Oprah just got OWNed! Jenny McCarthy, who was set to create a television series for Oprah Winfrey's struggling OWN network, decided to back out and leave the network. The former Playboy Playmate signed a development deal in 2009 with the network, but after growing increasingly frustrated with OWN's creative team, the actress decided to bail out of the deal. A source claims that "Jenny wasn't thrilled with the direction that OWN producers were going with on the show....she had been working with Oprah and her producers for over a year, developing this project for OWN. Jenny finally decided to embrace Oprah's philosophy, which is to 'follow your bliss.' Well, Jenny followed her bliss and walked right off the project." She's using Oprah's own words against her? It looks like someone won't be getting a brand new car for free anytime soon.
An OWN rep confirmed this latest development stating, "OWN does not have a show in development with Jenny McCarthy."" But to add insult to injury, McCarthy decided to take the concept for the show she was going to produce with OWN and give it to NBC instead. Oh no -- a retired Playboy Bunny did NOT just pull a fast one on our Oprah. And here I thought bunnies were supposed to be cute and cuddly. As of right now McCarthy and NBC are playing this one close to the chest and not commenting on the situation. An NBC Universal rep simply stated, "We do not comment on projects in development.""
Winfrey's basic cable channel is struggling with mediocre ratings in its 19 months on the air and with McCarthy rubbing salt on an already exposed and bleeding wound, the outlook for the network isn't looking too good. Winfrey has never been one to roll over without a fight though, so let's not give up on our girl yet. Jenny, however, should be expecting some hate mail coming her way. Messing with Oprah is like messing with a god: punishment is inevitable and she never forgets.
