MILWAUKEE (WRN-WSAU) A panel of federal judges have dismissed a lawsuit asking the court to take over Wisconsin’s redistricting process. The three judges with the Eastern District federal court in Milwaukee rejected a lawsuit filed by former Democratic state Senator Judy Robson, ruling that no special circumstances exist that warrant the court getting involved in the matter.
Robson had filed the lawsuit urging the court to take over the redistricting process, claiming the Legislature had divided some cities in separate districts and had weakened minority voting rights.
Lawmakers earlier this month passed new Republican-backed Congressional and Legislative district maps. Governor Scott Walker has not yet signed them into law.
If Walker signs-off on the new maps, Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids would move from the 7th to the 3rd Congressional District. The 7th would add additional territory in northeastern Wisconsin.
