WAUWATOSA, Wis (WSAU) One of suburban Milwaukee’s largest shopping malls closed early yesterday afternoon, after reports of young people running and yelling, and unconfirmed reports of gunfire. Wauwatosa Police were called to the Mayfair Mall, but they refused to release any information until later today.
Mall manager Steve Smith said a group of young people created an isolated disturbance, and no one was hurt.
Shopper Elsa Mercado told the Journal Sentinel she was trapped inside the Ann Taylor Loft store when that store and others brought down their security gates. And a frightened man was let in after he appeared pale and said there were gunshots in the mall. Mercado said she saw at least 100 rowdy people in one group. And when she called 9-1-1, she got the impression that the problem was in the entire mall and was not isolated.
At Macy’s, a cosmetics worker said she was told shots were fired outside the mall – but she didn’t hear them herself. Smith said the Mayfair Mall closed “shortly before (our) regular closing time” so help police identify and arrest suspects. And he said quote, “We anticipate there will be consequences as a result of what happened today.”
