MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Milwaukee officials were warning people on Tuesday to stay away from thawing lakeshore ice after a 23-year-old man died following a slip into the icy waters of Lake Michigan.
The man was taking photos with his girlfriend on Valentine's Day afternoon on a large piece of ice at the water's edge when it broke away, causing him to slip and fall into the water, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department.
The man was recovered by the Milwaukee Fire Department dive rescue team about 20 minutes later, and they were able to resuscitate him. However, he died a short time later at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, the Sheriff's Department said.
Even after the accident, people were seen venturing out on the ice at the water's edge, prompting authorities to issue the warning. The thaw is expected to continue through Friday, and is drawing larger numbers of people to the lakefront.
