MILWAUKEE (WSAU) Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee defended Tommy Thompson’s conservative record during a visit to Milwaukee last night. Huckabee endorsed the Republican Thompson in next year’s U-S Senate election. And he slammed the national conservative Club-for-Growth for saying Thompson is not a true conservative.
Huckabee, who ran for president four years ago, said Thompson’s 14 years as Wisconsin governor was highlighted by conservative principles, tax cuts, and reforms of welfare and education. And Huckabee said the Club-for-Growth had no understanding of what it takes to govern. Club spokesman Barney Keller responded by asking quote, “Who is Mike Huckabee?”
Huckabee said Thompson does not need the Senate job – but rather, the job needs him. Former Congressman Mark Neumann is also seeking the G-O-P Senate nomination, along with state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and state Senate Republican Frank Lasee. It became an open seat after Democrat Herb Kohl said he would step down after next year. (End)
