MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WHBL-KFIZ) - The National Transportation Safety Board has issued a preliminary report on the Lake Winnebago plane crash last month during the EAA AirVenture that claimed two lives. Forty-seven-year-old Steven Staples of Makanda, Illinois was apparently trying to do an aerobatic maneuver when the plane crashed into the Lake on July 25th killing him and his passenger 36-year-old Michelle Palermo of Kimberly. Witnesses told investigators Staples was attempting what is known as a “hammerhead” move. The crash happened about a half mile offshore of Wendt’s on The Lake. Both Staples and Palermo died at the scene. (File photo from KFIZ)
