MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in Milwaukee Wednesday that his department hopes to find the source of a ground turkey salmonella outbreak very soon.

Vilsack spoke to a meeting of the International Association of Food Protection.

He says that federal investigators are working with producers to nail down a source of the ground turkey – and then issue a recall of that product.

One person died from the outbreak, and 76 others from around the country became sick as far back as March.

Wisconsin health officials said two adults and an infant from Dane, Milwaukee, and Kenosha counties came down with the illness – and all three people have since recovered. Only one of them actually had the ground turkey that’s being investigated.

Vilsack said the keys to cooking safe turkey are to read the labels, and cook it properly. If people have doubts about their products, Vilsack says to throw them away.
