GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC News) - Things are still touch-and-go with the injured 17-year-old son of Calvin College’s men’s basketball coach following a Tuesday crash near his home.
School officials say that Daniel Vande Streek has been moved from Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital, where he was initially taken following the wreck on Chicago Drive at 18th Avenue west of Jenison, to DeVos Children’s Hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit. He is in critical but stable condition with a broken collar bone, some brain swelling, and other injuries.
The son of Knights’ coach Kevin Vande Streek was driving his van on a green light southbound through the intersection when his vehicle was broadsided 100 feet by a full-speed pickup truck whose driver was apparently distracted by searching for some papers inside of his cab and didn’t see the red light ahead of him. A passenger in the van, along with the pickup driver, suffered minor injuries.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, with no indications as of yet if any charges may be filed against the truck driver, 38-year-old Daniel Rickert of Grant.
