MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - The head of the Democratic National Committee says attacks on Social Security will help Russ Feingold and other Democrats win this fall.
Tim Kaine was in Milwaukee this week to open a new campaign office and meet with candidates. He said Republican Ron Johnson’s comparison of Social Security to a “Ponzi scheme” would score points for Feingold.
Kaine says other Republicans around the country level the same criticisms, and the voters won’t buy it. Kaine says Social Security has helped keep seniors out of poverty for 75 years, and it’s hard to find a government program that’s more popular.
Johnson stands by his Ponzi scheme remark – but he says he’s a big supporter of Social Security, and he only wants to see some changes so it stays solvent. Janesville House Republican Paul Ryan has suggested that younger people be allowed to invest Social Security funds privately to try and get bigger returns.
But Feingold opposes any privatization, and a seniors group that feels the same way has endorsed him. Ryan Tronovitch of the Republican National Committee says Democrats are trying to scare seniors with falsehoods about Social Security, while Johnson and other Republicans are trying to revive the economy.
