UNDATED (WSAU) 5pm yesterday was the deadline for hunters to register deer from the 9-day gun-deer season. It's not clear if the number of deer harvested are up or down from a year ago.
Most hunters expect the numbers to be up slightly compared to 2009, which many consider to be one of the worst hunting seasons in recent memory. The number of deer taken last year was down 27-percent.
The D-N-R will have preliminary figures on the gun-deer season today or tomorrow. On opening weekend this year, the number of deer taken was up 6-percent from a year ago. Many hunters continue to say the D-N-R's estimates of the deer population are wildly inaccurate, and that numbers are down because of more natural predators and chronic wasting disease.
