SAN DIEGO (WSAU) The wife of Milwaukee School Board member David Voeltner got a hero’s welcome in San Diego yesterday.
Martha Voeltner and six friends were aboard a Carnival cruise ship that returned to its starting point, after it had a fire on Monday and never made it to its first port-of-call. About four-thousand people were aboard what was supposed to be a week-long trip to the Mexican Riviera. The boat left last Sunday. But 12 hours later, Stephanie Kern of Menomonee Falls thought she felt an earthquake. When she peeked outside, she saw a cloud of smoke from the ship’s engine room. The disabled ship was tugged back to San Diego. Kern said a lot of food perished, and the passengers ended up living on sandwiches, Spam, and Pop-Tarts.
A big crowd was on hand to greet the passengers when they returned to the mainland. Carnival offered the passengers refunds, reimbursement for their travel, and a free cruise in the future.
