Wisconsin GOP convention in Milwaukee this weekend

UNDATED (WSAU) Wisconsin Republicans will begin their annual convention in Milwaukee tonight with about twice as many delegates as a year ago. The party expects around 15-hundred people to attend. About 700 showed up last year. State G-O-P chairman Reince Priebus says people are quote, “motivated like never before to shake up Madison and Washington.”

The interest is so high that tomorrow’s session was moved from Milwaukee’s Hyatt Regency Hotel to the Frontier Airlines convention center. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and Janesville House Republican Paul Ryan will speak to the delegates tonight.

Endorsements are expected tomorrow for governor and lieutenant governor. An endorsement for the U-S Senate race could come tomorrow or Sunday. Former congressman Mark Neumann has asked the delegates not to endorse him, clearing the way for Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker. Neumann said last week he’d rather have the people’s support than the party insiders – and he’s stepped up his attacks on Walker since then. Four candidates are vying for the U-S Senate endorsement. Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson entered the race this week, joining Dick Leinenkugel, Terrence Wall, and Dave Westlake.

60-percent of delegates must support a candidate in their final vote in order to make an endorsement.
