BROOKFIELD, Wis. (WTAQ) - A man ran off with a $36,000 diamond ring from a store in Brookfield. And authorities say it might be part of a larger theft spree in several states. According to reports, the man walked into the Rogers and Hollands store in Brookfield Square last week and asked to see the ring. And when employees showed it to him, police said he grabbed it and ran off.
He left behind an ID card from Michigan. And when investigators checked it out, they learned it was similar to a few other jewelry thefts in several states – including one in Gurnee Illinois a few miles south of the Wisconsin border. That heist occurred about an hour-and-a-half after the one in Brookfield. Officials say the group targets jewelry stores in malls that are close to freeways. Brookfield Square is next to Interstate 94, just west of Milwaukee.
