MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - Freddie Mac has chosen Milwaukee for a new campaign aimed at helping homeowners ward off foreclosure, and assisting those buying new houses.
The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation is giving $175,000 in startup funds for an ad campaign, a hotline, and a Web site. Media outlets will provide additional funding. The program is called “Take Root Milwaukee.”
Rick Padilla of Freddie Mac said the city was chosen because it has an existing program to deal with foreclosures. Mayor Tom Barrett started that program in 2009.
Meanwhile, the State Republican Party says one of the project’s partners used to be connected with ACORN, the community activist group that disbanded after a host of scandals.
But city development spokesman Jeff Fleming called the GOP’s allegation “baseless,” said Milwaukee has partnered with a variety of respected groups to improve its housing situation.
