MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - A Milwaukee man will spend at least 8 years in a federal prison for kidnapping and raping a woman he forced into marriage.
Thaying Lor was given a maximum sentence of 12 years Monday – but if he behaves in prison, he could end up serving two-thirds of that time.
Lor was charged a few months ago, after a bailiff heard at a divorce hearing that his wife was forced into sex beginning at age 12. The bailiff contacted investigators.
Lor said his actions were proper under the terms of an arranged Hmong marriage. But prosecutors called it criminal behavior. The woman was granted a divorce in March in Milwaukee, even though the couple was never officially married in Wisconsin. She has custody of their 6 children. And some of them testified against Lor at his trial.
