Bay Port Pirates Repeat

The Bay Port Pirates have brought home the gold for a second straight year, winning the Division 1 state baseball championship 10-5 over Madison LaFollette at Fox Cities Stadium Thursday night.   The Pirates gave up a run in the first but answered with three of their own and broke the game open with a 5 run second inning, capped by sophomore Ben Messenger's grand slam home run.  Marshall Zahn went the distance on the mound as the Pirates built a 9-1 lead before giving up 4 runs in the 7th.   Bay Port becomes the first team to repeat as D-1 champs since Sun Prairie in 2000 and 2001.  It's the second state title in school history.

More Preps

The Bay Port Pirate girls thought they had an early lead on Neenah in the Division 1 soccer quarterfinals in Milwaukee Thursday, but the goal was disallowed on an offsides call.   Neenah then punched one in and went on to win 3-0 to advance to the semifinals.  The Kaukauna girls softball team has reached the state championship game after shutting out Appleton East 2-0 and then Chippewa Falls 4-0 as Lauren Danner pitched a pair of complete games. The Ghosts will meet Mequon Homestead in the title game.   Other area teams in tournament action today include Luxemburg-Casco seeking a second straight Division 2 softball title and Peshtigo in Division 3.  Appleton Xavier, Menasha St. Mary's and New Holstein all play in the girls soccer tournament.

A popular score

The Wisconsin TimberRattlers fell to Clinton 3-2 in what proved to be a popular baseball score Thursday.  The Green Bay Bullfrogs split a doubleheader with Wisconsin Rapids at Joannes Stadium Thursday night, losing the first game 3-2 and winning the nightcap by that same score.

Wisconsinites at Pebble Beach

Par was hard to break at the first round of the 110th United States Open Golf Championship at Pebble Beach.  Only 9 players finished the first round under par.  Madison's Jerry Kelly shot a one over 72 and Steve Stricker struggled with an opening round 75.
