MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - An employee of the Head Start program in Milwaukee has been fired as the result of a national undercover investigation into alleged fraud.
Deborah Blanks of Milwaukee’s Social Development Commission said the employee enrolled a child in the program without making sure the family met the program’s income limits.
Earlier this year, the General Accounting Office said there were 2 incidents of fraud in Wisconsin and 6 cases in 4 other states and Washington D.C. But the government did not say where the fraud took place.
Blanks said the GAO brought the Milwaukee incident to her attention, and she’s not sure where the other Wisconsin incident occurred. More details are expected when the GAO issues its final report in a few weeks.
GAO investigators accused workers of violating eligibility limits in order to fill vacant spots for children at their centers, with the apparent goal of preserving their federal funding.
