MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - A baby girl died early Monday in Milwaukee, while sleeping with her mother and 2 siblings. The medical examiner’s office said 1-month-old Shaniyla Malone was not responsive when her 24-year-old mother Sheila woke up about 3 hours after they went to sleep.
She told investigators the baby appeared blue – nothing was covering the baby’s face – and she did not wake up on top of the youngster. There were no signs of trauma, and officials said the girl did not have apparent health complications at birth.
Police say they’re still investigating, but they don’t believe a crime was committed. Shanilya Malone is at least the 8th infant to die this year in Milwaukee County while co-sleeping with an adult. Milwaukee health officials have been urging parents to have their babies sleep in cribs. Malone told officers she was on a maternity leave from her job at a child care center, and she did not own a crib.
