MILWAUKEE (WSAU) Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker says it’s not known why an interior decorative panel fell from a wall yesterday at Mitchell International Airport. Media reports said the panel hit a teenager in the head, and he received a deep cut – but the boy refused medical help, and he went on a flight he had scheduled.
The fiber-board panel weighed 14 pounds, and airport spokeswoman Pat Rowe said it fell 15-feet before hitting the youngster. Rowe said the airport’s maintenance crews checked the other panels yesterday, and none were at risk of falling. The incident occurred just over a month after a 15-year-old boy was struck-and-killed by a decorative panel that fell from a Milwaukee County parking ramp near the city’s lakefront. That incident is also being investigated.
Walker said he proposed $1.5-million in next year’s county budget to finish a quality assessment of all major county-owned buildings. He said about two-thirds of 100 buildings have already had emergency inspections in the wake of the parking ramp death.
