VANCOUVER, B.C. (WTAQ) - An Olympic luge athlete is dead after a horrific crash during training Friday. Nodar Kumaritashvili of Georgia died after he lost control of his sled near the end of a practice run. He was ejected from the course and his body hit an exposed steel support pole. The 21-year-old was given CPR and rushed to a local hospital, but ended up dying of his injuries.
There had been questions about the safety of the track before the accident, and a number of crashes have occured during training throughout the week. The men's single luge competition is supposed to start Saturday.
