WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - Milwaukee urban farmer Will Allen joined the First Lady Tuesday in rolling out a national campaign to fight obesity in children. Michelle Obama unveiled a program called “Let’s Move.” It encourages youngsters to exercise more, and it encourages schools to offer healthier food. Allen is especially interested in that latter part.
He’s the founder of Growing Power Incorporated – a Milwaukee firm that creates urban farming practices, and teaches young people how to use them to grow food in the inner city. Allen’s work has received federal recognition in the past – and that’s partially why he got to share the stage with the First Lady. Allen says people should ask why we settle for poor quality food for our kids. He says schools should only hand out healthy foods, both in the cafeteria and in the classroom.
