MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - UW-Milwaukee could soon get bigger. The school said Friday it obtained an option to buy the adjacent Columbia-Saint Mary’s Hospital complex for just over $20 million.
Columbia is moving into a new facility. And that will let UWM take over an 11-acre property with seven buildings, including a five-story parking ramp.
Chancellor Carlos Santiago said the campus reached an agreement in principle with the hospital – and it will give the land-locked UW campus a bit of breathing room.
The UW Board of Regents agreed in January to spend $31 million to buy the hospital site. Officials are not sure how it will be used yet – but it could include student housing, student services, and some new space for academic programs.
Two appraisals came up with the $20 million purchase price. The State Building Commission will be asked to okay the purchase next Wednesday. It would be the largest expansion of the UW-Milwaukee campus since 1964.
