Opening Gun Deer Weekend Sees Slow Start

APPLETON (WRN) - Hunters are reporting an extremely slow start to Wisconsin’s 9 day gun deer season. The opening weekend was marred by warm temperatures, plus heavy fog for much of Saturday morning in many places. Shad DeWitt of Neenah said deer were just lying down and hiding in the grass. Paul Selle of Appleton called it the worst year in the last 30. A station west of Appleton registered only half the deer from a year ago. A station in Weyauwega registered a-third of last year’s total on Saturday’s opening day. Hunters have until Monday afternoon to register their opening weekend’s take. And then the DNR will release the opening weekend harvest numbers. Meanwhile, an autopsy is planned Monday on the body of a hunter found dead Sunday afternoon near Janesville. He had been missing since Friday night, after he went out hunting alone. His name was not immediately released.
