MILWAUKEE (WRN) - A homeless Milwaukee man has been charged with killing a 6-month-old baby by stuffing her body under a mattress. 36-year-old Darius Woodley was among 4 people arrested in last Saturday’s death of Dekia Mattox. But prosecutors say he’s the only one expected to be charged. The Journal Sentinel said Dekia’s family was the subject of an ongoing investigation by the state-run Milwaukee Child Welfare Bureau. The agency is preparing a report with details. According to the criminal complaint, the baby’s aunt left the child with her boyfriend and Woodley on Christmas Eve in a cold cottage which was known as a drug house. She was still gone more than a day later when her boyfriend went to look for her. And when he returned to the cottage, he saw Woodley passed out on a bed and a lump on a mattress. That’s where the baby was found unconscious. The child’s aunt then returned – and prosecutors said Woodley tried to run away but was held down by a neighbor. The neighbor used CPR to revive the baby before rescuers arrived – but the young girl died a short time later from head trauma. Woodley is charged with first-degree reckless homicide.
